G-3AlmaEight Peregrine falcon chicks have hatched at the Genoa and Alma nesting sites! Dairyland has nesting boxes at both its Genoa and Alma, Wis., sites. Falcons returned to both nesting sites this year. The first egg was laid in the Genoa nesting box on April 2, with three more quickly following. They hatched the week of May 12. The Peregrine falcon pair at the Alma Site apparently decided against returning to the nearby cliff dwelling they established last year in favor of the power plant nesting box. As with the Genoa falcons, the Alma pair incubated four eggs, which all successfully hatched the week of May 19.
2007 was the first year that Peregrines at either the Alma or Genoa sites chose to nest on a natural cliff dwelling versus the man-made nesting box on the power plant smokestack. It was expected that the Alma falcons would again try to nest on 12 Mile Bluff, but apparently they enjoy the “easy living” of predator-free nest boxes.
