The business activities of GEN~SYS Energy integrated into Dairyland Power Cooperative on January 1, 2011.

GEN~SYS Energy provided wholesale power marketing and related risk management services as the agent for Dairyland. On January 1, 2011, the staff and services in these areas transferred to a new division within Dairyland known as Power Marketing.

GEN~SYS Energy staff in the Technical Services Group became part of the External and Member Relations Division in a new department titled Energy Efficiency and Technical Services. This group provides a variety of technical services, including commercial energy audits, to member cooperatives of Dairyland and Corn Belt Power, Humboldt, Iowa. They will also develop energy efficiency strategies and administer Dairyland’s incentive and rebate program.

On June 1, 2010, Dairyland became a transmission-owning member of the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (Midwest ISO), placing its entire transmission and generation system within the Midwest ISO. Due to this event and other changes affecting GEN~SYS Energy and its members, the Boards of Directors of GEN~SYS Energy and Dairyland decided to integrate the wholesale marketing and risk management functions of GEN~SYS Energy within Dairyland.

Prior to its integration into Dairyland, its recent members included Dairyland Power Cooperative, Corn Belt Power Cooperative and Distribu-Gen Cooperative (La Crosse).

History

GEN~SYS Energy was originally formed by Dairyland Power Cooperative of La Crosse, Wis., and Cooperative Power (one of two co-ops which later formed Great River Energy) of Eden Prairie, Minn., as a strategic alliance in 1996. GEN~SYS combined the cooperatives’ generation and power marketing resources for the benefit of both the cooperatives and their members.

GEN~SYS Energy became a Minnesota-based cooperative corporation in 1997 to provide energy marketing services to its members. These services included power marketing, energy scheduling and unit dispatch, natural gas services, contract management and hedging market exposure. It was recognized by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Mid-Continent Area Power Pool (MAPP) as a marketing entity.

On May 1, 1999, Dairyland acquired Cooperative Power’s interest in GEN~SYS Energy. In October 1999, Corn Belt Power Cooperative of Humbolt, Iowa, joined Dairyland as a non-power marketing member of GEN~SYS Energy. In July 2001, Distribu-Gen (a Wisconsin cooperative, that was focused on promoting distributed generation products such as fuel cells and micro-turbines) joined GEN~SYS Energy.

In 2002, GEN~SYS Energy expanded its services into the area of standby generation, energy management and power quality (Technical Services Division). Technical Services focused on energy use and power quality at the wholesale and end user level.
